4 Things you need to practice for Trivia like a Pro

Ever wonder how some people seem to know just about everything when it comes to Trivia? You begin to wonder if they’re a witch because their breadth of knowledge is so vast that they can’t possibly get that one right. “Who knows that?” is constantly screamed at weird questions. Well, there’s a method to the madness when it comes to practicing and becoming great at Trivia.

A Good Base

The first thing any trivia aficionado needs is a good base of knowledge in order to be generally aware of things. For example, if you’re asked a question about which President served during the Korean War - you may not know exactly which one. Yet, you do know some Presidents and by process of elimination you could make a best guess. Platitudes like this allow you to make educated decisions during Trivia and while you may not have a 100% success rate will be helpful. Therefore you should be studying broad knowledge of subjects to familiarize yourself with them so you can have this in your arsenal.

Reinforced Memory

Just like you would study for a test - the professionals are studying for Trivia! What are the best study tools? Flash cards are well spoken for and a staple in the Trivia community. They’re timeless and more importantly they’re quick. You can get hundreds of questions in, inside of an hour. Your exposure to these questions over and over will help you remember them. Even a single glance at a question can be brought up from your memory at a later date. When you get a question wrong and then hear the answer this also helps reinforce that in information and expands your Trivia knowledge.

Learning as a way of Life

What you do every day matters. If you spend your time watching the same series of a TV show, there’s nothing wrong with that. That TV show may even come up as a question on a Trivia game! What you can do is listen or watch more general things - like podcasts. History podcasts are a great way to expand your Trivia knowledge since history is a general category. A single podcast or history documentary can cover decades of topics that may help you during your next game.

Understand the Categories

Trivia typically covers a few main categories of things. History like we mentioned - as well as pop culture, science, sports, geography, and art. Knowing that these categories will likely be featured in any game you play is a huge advantage and can guide your learning experience. Statistically you’re much more likely to get a question about Geography than Food so you should spend a considerable amount of more time studying that.

Whatever strategy you decide to employ will certainly help you no matter what. Trivia after all is just memorization! Expose yourself to as much information as possible to give yourself the best chance. Make sure you have a great network around you as well. Maybe you’re great at Art, but haven’t watched a sports game in years - bring a sports fanatic to your team at the next event and turn your weakness into a strength!
